Study Into The Effects Of eLearning on HE

A Study Into The Effects Of eLearning On Higher Education The Internet is a technological development that has the potential to change not only the way society retains and accesses knowledge but also to transform and restructure traditional models of higher education, particularly the delivery and interaction in and with course materials and associated resources. Utilising the Internet to deliver eLearning initiatives has created expectations both in the business market and in higher education
institutions. Indeed, eLearning has enabled universities to expand on their current geographical reach, to capitalise on new prospective students and to establish themselves as global educational providers. This paper examines the issues surrounding the implementation of eLearning into higher education, including the structure and delivery of higher education, the implications to both students and lecturers.

Perceived Behavioral Control, Self-Efficacy, etc

Perceived Behavioral Control, Self-Efficacy, Locus of Control, and the Theory of Planned Behavior1

Abstract: Conceptual and methodological ambiguities surrounding the concept of perceived behavioral
control are clarified. It is shown that perceived control over performance of a behavior, though comprised of separable components that reflect beliefs about self-efficacy and about controllability, can nevertheless be considered a unitary latent variable in a hierarchical factor model. It is further argued that there is no necessary correspondence between
self-efficacy and internal control factors, or between controllability and external control factors.

Literature review

Review of Literature on the Use of
Information and Communication Technology in the context of Careers Education and Guidance

The first literature review was undertaken in February 2003. The amount of
specific literature relating to the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in careers education in schools and colleges was limited.

The initial review, therefore, drew on the findings from studies that focused on the use of ICT in the broader context of learning. Although not exhaustive, it aimed to provide an analysis of key historical and contemporary data concerning the barriers to the uptake and use of ICT by teachers. In particular, the review was designed to inform an external evaluation of the ‘Connecting Careers and ICT’ publication and the associated Careers Education and Guidance (CEG) website.

An Empirical Testing of the Theory of Planned Behavior in Explaining IT Adoption looks at Azjdens model in relation to E-TAM.

Conclusions were:

"In spite of these limitations, the study contributed in several ways as mentioned above. Some additional general observations about TAM/TPB models can be made. The TAM is a baseline and simple model that is useful in predicting attitude and intention, as has been observed many times in research; however, the TPB model is also important and more general in nature, as introduced in the constructs SN and PBC. Among these constructs, PBC is the most significant across all IT products. This is in consonance to the observation made by Karahanna et al. (1999), that addition of the perceived behavioral control (PBC) construct may provide further insights and increase the explained variance of the theoretical model of technology adoption."

Extending the Technology Acceptance Model to Account for Social Influence:

The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) represents an
important theoretical contribution toward understanding IS usage and IS acceptance behaviors [6, 19]. However, as noted by several IS researchers [cf: 4, 5, 6, 9, 14], TAM is incomplete in one important respect: it doesn't account for social influence in the adoption and utilization of new information systems. Davis [4] and Davis et al. [6] noted that it is important to account for subjective norm (SN),the construct denoting social influence. However, they
observed that the conceptualization of SN based on TRA

psychometric problem

Stories of teacher alienation

Stories of teacher alienation: a look at the unintended consequences of efforts to empower teachers

This article presents and analyzes the stories of three teachers/teacher teams who participated in a grant program
designed to empower teachers to integrate technology innovations in their classrooms. Instead of experiencing
actualized empowerment, these teachers/teacher teams ultimately experienced alienation. From these stories, two sources of alienation are identified: (1) resources obtained by teachers through grant acquisition can disrupt the egalitarian teacher culture, and (2) increased subjective empowerment and pressure afforded by grants can lead to an escalation of existing conflicts. Overall, the teachers experienced alienation when their initial, subjective sense of empowerment was undermined by the teacher culture and/or administrative decisions.

Getting the search terms correct

The last week has been somewhat frustrating in trying to define the criteria for the literature search. My initial thoughts were to have a series of clearly defined words or phrases which could be applied across some of the common search engines and which would create a list of articles etc.

The criteria originally included:
- elearning OR educational technology
AND - "higher education"
AND - resistance OR barriers OR attitudes OR perceptions
AND - staff

IN last 10 years.

However while this worked relatively well in some areas the criteria was in itself ether too limiting or too free e.g. articles would be brought back for education rather than higher education.

Further work required perhaps simplifying the process. Disapointing as wanted to finish this to place into the project specification. Also need to identify a set list of journals and/or publishers to search. This will include dialog@ although acces to the material is limited.

role of teaching staff

Virtual seminars and their impact on the role of the teaching staff

Teaching staffand academic researchers tend to cite the reasons for introducing computer supported collaborative learning in pedagogic terms, plus the need to provide transferable skills. The focus of this paper is the current demands on teaching sta ffin UK Higher Education and the impact these demands have when teaching through electronic resources. The reported research into the changing role of the tutor was initiated through work on the ASTER Project (Assisting Small-group Teaching through Electronic Resources)http://cti.psy.york.ac.uk/aster.The ASTER Project, funded through the UK Teaching and Learning Technology Programme (TLTP)phase 3,aimed to explore how Communication and Information Technology (C&IT)can assist students and lecturers in making the most of small group-based learning and to promote and support e ffective change in educational practice. Our conclusions and findings, based on the use of Virtual Seminars within a Higher Education Psychology department, suggest the need for increased financial support for additional sta ffdevelopment and training in the use of C&IT.It was also established that there is a need for tutors to maintain full support for students in the move to an increased use of technology in their learning.

Perceived Behavioral Control,

Ajzen's article covering Perceived Behavioral Control is perhaps one of the most important ideas on why academics behave diferently in relation to educational technology.
